Kutaisi ( Georgian: ქუთაისი) is the 3rd most populous city in Georgia, traditionally, second in importance, after the capital city of Tbilisi. The Gelati Monastery of the Virgin near Kutaisi is the most significant medieval monastery in Georgia. The center of church and cultural life, the residence of the Catholicos from the 2nd half of the 16th century to 1814. World Heritage Monument (1994). The monastery was founded by King David IV the Builder in 1106 and became its tomb. The cathedral church was built before 1125 and for another five years was decorated with mosaics, which are considered the best in the whole of Transcaucasia. At that time, the monastery was the seat of the Gelati Academy, whose members were keenly interested in ancient Greek philosophy.
Motsameta (Georgian: მოწამეთა) also know as Motsameta monastery is a complex of monasteries at the Imereti region, approximately 6 km northeast of the center of Kutaisi, Georgia. The monastery is picturesquely located on the cliff of a promontory in the curve of the Tskaltsitela river, a tributary of the Rioni river. Its name, whose meaning is the "Place of the Martyrs".
Prometheus cave (Georgian პრომეთეს მღვიმე), also known as Kumistavi cave (Georgian ყუმისთავის მღვიმე), Tskaltubo cave or Tskaltubo-Gliana cave (Georgian ღლიანის მღვიმე) is a karst cave in the west of Georgia, in the vicinity of Tskhal. The total length of the cave is about 11 km, of which 1060 m are open to visitors.
